Research and Best Practices

The Handbook is designed to guide state, district, and school Title I personnel in providing high-quality, research-based family and community engagement programs and experiences. Thirty-six experts on a range of topics contributed to the Handbook. Each chapter provides grounding in research and practical action principles for the field. A concluding chapter lists specific recommended practices for the state, district, and school. The.....

Screening for Mathematics Difficulties in K-3 Students - Second Edition
This second edition of Screening for Mathematics Difficulties in K-3 Students which was originally published in 2007 updates the document with new research in the assessment field in developing valid and reliable screening measures for early mathematics difficulties. It focuses on valid and reliable screening measures for students in kindergarten and first grade but also examines data on screening tests for second and third graders, since the goal of screening is to identify students who might struggle to learn mathematics during their initial.....
Synopsis of "Writing to Read: Evidence for How Writing Can Improve Reading"
This synopsis of Graham and Hebert's meta-analysis presents an overview of their findings and describes implications for practice. It is intended to serve as a first step that will encourage further exploration of the "Writing to Read" document. The authors describe a range of instructional practices that have demonstrated a positive effect on reading outcomes and provide guidance on how teachers can use writing instruction to strengthen students' reading performance.
This resource pertains to the following categories:

Progress Monitoring for Elementary Mathematics (COI)
This PowerPoint presentation from the November 2006 Math Summit: Providing Evidence-Based Practices and Implications of NCTM Focal Points provides an overview of progress monitoring systems that can be used to track student growth in elementary mathematics.
A Comprehensive K-3 Reading Assessment Plan: Guidance for School Leaders (COI)
Because scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated the value of regularly assessing reading progress, a comprehensive assessment plan is a critical element of an effective school-level plan for preventing reading difficulties. This guide from the Center on Instruction provides valuable information for school leaders. While the general principles, such as the early identification of students who are struggling in learning to read, are all based on scientific findings, the detailed recommendations for implementation derive from practical.....
The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) Website
The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) conducts and communicates research to support high quality, effective, early childhood education for all young children. Such education enhances their physical, cognitive, and social development, and subsequent success in school and later life.
The Institute offers independent research-based advice and technical assistance to policy makers, journalists, researchers, and educators.
The Institute's research program aims to:
* Provide a vision of early education excellence.....
Improving Reading Comprehension in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade
This guide, developed by a panel of experts, presents a set of evidence-based practices that teachers and other educators can use to successfully teach reading comprehension to young readers. The panel review indicates that students who read with understanding at an early age gain access to a broader range of texts, knowledge, and educational opportunities, making early reader comprehension instruction particularly critical. The guide also describes the evidence that supports the practices and gives examples of how they can be implemented in.....
Report: Assisting students struggling with mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for elementary and middle schools
This Practice Guide, released by IES in April 2009, aims to help educators develop and implement Response to Intervention to assist students struggling in math. The focus is building an instructional program in order to improve outcomes for students who have difficulty with math. The guide presents recommendations about screening, instruction, and progress monitoring and indicates the quality of the research base that supports them. It includes common questions and potential concerns that might arise with each recommendation and suggestions to.....

Intervention Report on three Voyager Reading Programs by the What Works Clearinghouse
What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) is releasing an Intervention Report on three Voyager Reading Programs. The three programs are Voyager Passport, a supplemental reading intervention system for students in grades K-5, Voyager Passport Reading Journeys, a reading intervention program designed for adolescents who struggle with reading, and Voyager Universal Literacy System, a K-3 reading program. The Clearinghouse examined the research on these Voyager reading programs for students with learning disabilities and identified 44 studies that were.....
Web-Based Resources for Science, Technology, and Engineering: Tools and Activities for Teaching and Learning
The entries compiled here are grouped by type (general or subject-specific), and include information about the appropriate grade level(s) for the online activities and sample lessons. Following these entries is an annotated bibliography of online articles and books.
Both the links and the resources presented here were selected by CAST in fall 2005 according to two criteria: 1) they shed light on the kinds of effective research, classroom practices, and policies that support standards-based learning, and 2) they can be accessed free of.....
Quick Review on Achievement Effects of Four Elementary School Math Curricula: Findings from First Graders in 39 Schools
This study examined the relative effectiveness of four widely-used early elementary school math curricula: Investigations in Number, Data, and Space; Math Expressions; Saxon Math; and Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics. The study included about 1,300 first graders from 39 schools in four school districts in Connecticut, Minnesota, New York, and Nevada.
Results:
First graders attending schools assigned to the ME and Saxon programs scored significantly higher on math assessments than students attending schools assigned to the.....
Effective Science Instruction: What Does Research Tell Us? (K-12)
Effective Science Instruction: What Does Research Tell Us? [K-12] Published by COI
A debate continues over what constitutes effective science instruction. This brief endeavors to distill the research on science learning to inform a common vision of science instruction and to describe the extent to which K-12 science education currently reflects this vision. A final section on implications for policymakers and science education practitioners describes actions that could integrate the findings from research into science education.
WWC Quick Review: Achievement Effects of Four Elementary School Math Curricula
This study examined the relative effectiveness of four widely-used early elementary school math curricula: (1) Investigations in Number, Data and Space (Investigations), (2) Math Expressions (ME), (3) Saxon Math (Saxon), and (4) Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics (SFAW).
