Secondary Writing Institute
For Language Art and Content Area Middle and High School Teachers, and Administrators

The Secondary Writing Institute is based on current research and effective practice for teaching writing across the curriculum to secondary students. The unique structure of this institute will allow teacher teams to participate in seminars each morning and work directly with small groups of students in the afternoon in order to immediately apply concepts presented in the seminars. Participating teachers will work with peers and mentor teachers and have time to plan lessons and reflect on the efficacy of their instructional practice with students.

In this institute participants will:

  • Incorporate the four strands of a balanced writing framework, composition; purpose and audience; revision and evaluation; conventions of print, editing, and appearance
  • Design and teach writing lessons which differentiate for diverse student needs
  • Develop and use assessment tools with student writing, primarily 6-Trait based
  • Learn how to integrate writing in lessons to deepen content/concept knowledge
  • Identify and understand the research which supports effective practices in writing
  • Align writing curriculum with Alaska State Performance Grade Level Expectations
  • Experience a variety of methods for classroom organization, management and record-keeping strategies

Credits: 3 UAS, ED593
Includes summer training & a wrap up in fall semester in order to earn the 3 credits.
Tuition: $500.00
Cost: $100 for materials; $90 for 3 UAS credits
Total: $690.00
