Components of Effective Schools

Resource information here is organized around six fundamental components related to school success and high academic achievement: curriculum, assessment, instruction, leadership, supportive learning environment, and professional development. Alaska’s Instructional Audit identifies these components as domains. For each domain we provide a brief introduction, identify the domain’s key elements, and present relevant resources.

Strategies, best practices, and interventions are the main focus for these resources, and three distinct types are presented:

Resources found in a journal, research report, article or similar document that will provide background information and/or expert advice regarding application of practices, programs or comprehensive processes.

Strategies, best practices, software, training materials, programs or publications that explain a specific process to follow or method to employ.

Although not intended to endorse the effectiveness of any particular program or practice, this list does aim to inform educators about proven best practices within the six domains and point to resources for pursuing improvement activities in these areas.
