Assessment

Assessment is the process of collecting, recording, scoring, monitoring, and interpreting information about a student’s progress, a teacher’s own learning or a school’s overall effectiveness. Some assessments are used for a record of accountability, but a primary purpose of assessment at the classroom level is to inform instructional decisions and ultimately to improve student achievement.

Alaska’s Instructional Audit identifies these key elements of focus within the domain of assessment:

• General assessment information
• Data collection and review
• Alignment of assessments with grade-level expectations (GLEs)
• Using formative assessments to guide instruction
