Instructional Practices

This resource discusses eight research-based practices for increasing students’ mathematics proficiency. Click below to learn more about each approach:

I. Focus on what students know, not just on correct answers.

II. Emphasize learning of mathematical concepts through solving problems.

III. Allow time for (formal and informal) practice of new skills and procedures and apply understanding through carefully sequenced series of tasks.

IV. Encourage student communication that focuses on mathematical thinking.

V. Use structured and flexible collaborative learning groups.

VI. Ensure students learn the “academic language” of mathematics.

VII. Use a variety of instructional tools, including technology.

VIII. Support at-risk (including special education and ELL) students by teaching inclusively.
