Reading

Reading instruction covers two broad areas: Early Reading, for grades K-4, and Adolescent Reading, for grades 5-12.

Resources for Elementary Reading are organized according to these five instructional components:

  • Phonics
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
  • Fluency

Resources for Secondary Reading are organized into seven types of strategies:

  • Teaching content area comprehension
  • Integrating reading and writing instruction
  • Motivating and engaging students
  • Reinforcing reading with discussion
  • Teaching vocabulary
  • Strategies to support special education students
  • Strategies to support ELL students

Within these seven types, we provide background information describing specific individual strategies and suggesting ways to use each strategy in the classroom.
