Encouraging Girls in Math and Science
Around the middle school years, many students, especially girls, lose interest in math and science. The Doing What Works website now demonstrates five key research-based practices to encourage girls – and boys – to retain interest and achievement in math and science.

National Mathematics Panel Report [K-12]
On March 13, 2008, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel presented its Final Report to the President of the United States and the Secretary of Education. The core report is a relatively brief 65 pages of text and includes a summary of the key recommendations made by the panel advisers.
The website also contains the five Task Group reports which provide extensive material on each of the major topics addressed: Core Knowledge and Concepts Necessary to Succeed in Algebra, Relevant Research on Learning Processes (i.e. how students learn mathematics), Instructional Practices, Teachers and Teacher Development, and Assessment.
Also available is a Fact Sheet and the draft subcommittee reports on Standards of Evidence, Instructional Materials, and the National Survey of Algebra Teachers for the National Math Panel.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Teachers of mathematics for centuries have helped students understand mathematics using “manipulatives”--
visual objects that help illustrate mathematical relationships and applications.
Manipulatives allow students to visually examine, explore and develop concepts.
Student Audience
This innovative teaching resource is highly adaptable and can be used with a broad spectrum of students. Math activities are provided for K-12 students.
Range of Topics
A simple-to-use index displays a list of math activities appropriate for teaching various math concepts to students at different levels. Subjects covered include number operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, probability, and more.
Program Features
NLVM math activities include:
• Virtual Math Manipulatives Instructions • Math Lesson Objectives •
• Math Lesson Plans • Suggestions for Outside Activities •
• Descriptions of Learning Assessment Methods & Math Concepts Demonstrated •
• Examples of Similar Physical Math Manipulatives • Links to related NCTM standards •
