Quickwrites
Classroom Examples of Quickwrites
Quick writing is short, focused writing in response to a specific prompt. This strategy is often used to bridge old learning to new and is a good tool for reflection.
In 100 Quickwrites: Fast and Effective Freewriting Exercises that Build Students' Confidence, Develop Their Fluency, and Bring Out the Writer in Every Student, Linda Rief (n.d.) provides a collection of poems and short passages suitable for work with middle school students. She suggests that teachers read one of the powerful pieces aloud and invite students to respond to one of the freewriting suggestions for two-three minutes! These are quick ways for the teacher to share models of strong writing, to get students writing and thinking, and to focus attention at the beginning of class.
