Text Comprehension Instruction
omprehension is widely defined as constructing meaning from text. That is, meaning resides in the deliberate thinking processes readers engage in as they read. The meaning they get from their reading is influenced by multiple factors, including prior knowledge and experiences, the nature and type of reading activity, and the abilities and skill the reader brings to the reading activity.
Comprehension strategies have been identified that can be explicitly taught to young readers. It is important for students to learn how to use comprehension strategies, not just learn them in isolation. So teachers help students use some of the following strategies to understand the text in front of them by modeling the strategy and supporting student practice in applying them.
