Comprehensive Monitoring

Classroom Examples of Comprehension Monitoring

Students need to be made aware of and taught to regulate their thought processes. They can be taught to choose from an array of possible strategies and how to use them effectively under varying circumstances. The regulation of learning involves monitoring and directing the process, recognizing when a strategy is ineffective, and employing “fix up” strategies that may increase the chances of success.

INSERT Technique (Interactive Notation to Effective Reading and Thinking)
This series of lessons introduces students to comprehension monitoring using a technique called INSERT, which teaches them to monitor their thinking and comprehension using a coding system. While the lesson is focused on students from grades 4-6, the strategy can be adapted easily for readers through grade 12.

Embedded Questions
Questions are inserted into a narrative reading selection to promote reflection and to model good reading behavior. Embedded questions develop students’ ability to generate their own questions while reading.
